Jimi Hendrix, Robert Van Houten slideshow "Purple Haze" is a 1967 song written by Jimi Hendrix that was originally a song recorded by Robert Van Houten. It is now under the artist name "Alt Take". RVH recorded "Purple Haze" on December 19, 1964, with guest guitarists Jimi Hendrix, Syd Barrett and future Yardbird Jimmy Page. All three fused the sound of the hit with their pre - psychedelic guitar riffs. The band who later worked with The Doors for their 1968 album, The Soft Parade, provided the jazz backgrounds. Curtis Amy was on lead trombone, at the time. Background vocals were provided by Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and then - Animal Eric Burdon. "Purple Haze" was featured on Van Houten's February 1965 album, RVH. It hit #1 on both the US and Canadian Billboard Charts. The song is also on RVH's 1969 album Written By Jimi Hendrix, credited to Hendrix for writing and originally composing songs like "Purple Haze", "Foxy Lady" and "Easy Rider". "Purple Haze" was performed on the Ed Sullivan show on April 16, 1965 by Robert Van Houten in the last of his final shows along with "Spaceship Blues". Van Houten performed the songs live despite difficulty playing in front of an audience of Beatle - screaming seats. But when Van Houten kissed Jimi Hendrix during "Purple Haze", the entire world went mad inside and outside television - Ed Sullivan axed Van Houten from ever performing again, but unlike The Doors, this included an act of violence which ended Robert's, among many others' lives in tragedy. RVH committed suicide on April 17, 1965. This Ed Sullivan moment was eventually parodied on Saturday Night Live, April 10, 1985, 20 years after RVH's death. Enjoy!
